The bracket comes from the power units on your MCS-150 — which is one more reason to keep the biennial update accurate: over-reporting units can push you across a bracket line worth hundreds of dollars.

How much is UCR registration?
The 2026 fee is bracketed by fleet size (49 CFR 367.50): $46 for 0–2 power units, $138 for 3–5, $276 for 6–20, $963 for 21–100, $4,592 for 101–1,000, and $44,836 for 1,001 or more. Brokers, freight forwarders, and leasing companies pay the lowest-bracket fee regardless of size.
What counts as a power unit for UCR?
Self-propelled commercial motor vehicles — trucks and tractors — as reported on your MCS-150. Trailers never count. Crossing a bracket line is expensive: going from 20 to 21 power units raises the fee from $276 to $963.
When is UCR registration due?
Registration for a year opens October 1 of the prior year and must be completed before January 1 of the registration year. States begin enforcement January 1 — roadside, a lapsed UCR is written under 49 CFR 392.2 and can mean state-set fines and even out-of-service.
Who has to register for UCR?
Motor carriers operating in interstate commerce (including private carriers of property), plus brokers, freight forwarders, and leasing companies — whether or not your base state participates in the UCR program. Purely intrastate operations with no interstate nexus are not subject.
What will UCR cost in 2027?
FMCSA has proposed raising every bracket roughly 20% for 2027 (91 FR 17618): $55 for 0–2 units, $167 for 3–5, $333 for 6–20, $1,163 for 21–100, $5,548 for 101–1,000, and $54,165 for 1,001+. As of August 2026 these are proposed, not final — the final rule is expected around September 2026.
Where do I actually register for UCR?
At plan.ucr.gov, or through your base state if it requires it. The official fee is the whole cost — third-party filing services add their own markup on top of the same registration.
