How the calculator works
Connecticut's Highway Use Fee (in effect since January 2023) applies to eligible vehicles with a gross weight of 26,000 lbs or more (Class 8–13). The rate ladder climbs from 2.5¢ per mile at the bottom to 10¢ at 80,000 lbs — and jumps to a flat 17.5¢ per mile over 80,000 lbs, which makes overweight-permit loads through Connecticut markedly more expensive than the same load one bracket down.
Unlike the quarterly weight-distance states, Connecticut files monthly through myconneCT. Registration, enforcement, and how HUF stacks with IFTA and NY HUT on a Northeast lane are covered in our Connecticut Highway Use Fee guide.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Connecticut Highway Use Fee calculated?
Connecticut miles multiplied by a per-mile rate that steps up with gross weight: from 2.5¢ per mile at 26,000 lbs to 10¢ at 78,001–80,000 lbs, and a flat 17.5¢ per mile for anything over 80,000 lbs. The full DRS schedule is on this page.
Who has to pay the CT Highway Use Fee?
Carriers operating eligible motor vehicles with a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or more (Class 8 through Class 13) on Connecticut public roads. You register for a Highway Use Fee permit with the Department of Revenue Services before operating, then file returns on your Connecticut miles.
How often is the CT Highway Use Fee filed?
Monthly — the return and payment are due the last day of the following month, filed electronically through the DRS myconneCT portal. A return is due even for months with no Connecticut miles while your permit is active.
Is anything exempt from the Connecticut Highway Use Fee?
The main statutory exemption is a motor vehicle carrying or transporting milk or dairy products to or from a dairy farm. There is no general exclusion for toll or turnpike miles — Connecticut has no truck tolls to exclude.
Is the CT Highway Use Fee the same as New York HUT?
Same idea — a per-mile tax bracketed by weight — but a separate program with its own registration, rates, and monthly (not quarterly) filing. A Northeast lane over 26,000 lbs commonly owes both: CT HUF for Connecticut miles and NY HUT for New York miles, on top of IFTA.
Is this the official DRS calculator?
No — it's a free estimator built on the DRS's official published per-mile schedule. Your actual return is filed through myconneCT and depends on your vehicle classification and any exempt operations.
