Estimate for one vehicle, one period, from the state's official published schedule. Filings also depend on exempt miles, method elections, and your assigned filing frequency — verify with the state before you file.

The July 1, 2026 rate increase

New Mexico's 2026 legislature raised the weight-distance tax roughly 35% across every bracket (Laws 2026, ch. 4 — Senate Bill 2, amending NMSA 7-15A-6), effective July 1, 2026. That mid-year split matters when you file: your Q2 2026 return uses the old schedule, and Q3 2026 onward uses the new one. The toggle above lets you price both periods; the table below shows the schedule in force today.

The tax applies to vehicles with a declared gross weight over 26,000 lbs, registered through the Motor Vehicle Division and filed quarterly with the Taxation & Revenue Department. Registration, the WDT permit, and enforcement are covered in our New Mexico WDT guide.

Frequently asked questions

Did New Mexico's weight distance tax go up in 2026?

Yes. Laws 2026, Chapter 4 (Senate Bill 2) raised every weight bracket roughly 35% effective July 1, 2026. Miles run through June 30, 2026 file at the old schedule; miles from July 1 on file at the new one. Many third-party rate pages still show the pre-increase numbers — check the effective date on anything you read.

What is the New Mexico WDT rate?

It's bracketed by declared gross weight in 2,000-lb steps. On the schedule in force since July 1, 2026, an 80,000-lb truck pays 5.91¢ per mile (up from 4.378¢); a 30,000-lb truck pays about 1.6¢. The full current table is on this page.

Who has to pay New Mexico weight distance tax?

Owners and operators of vehicles with a declared gross weight over 26,000 pounds traveling on New Mexico highways. You register the vehicle for WDT, get a permit, and file quarterly returns with the Taxation and Revenue Department — separate from IFTA and IRP.

What is the one-way haul rate?

Carriers that customarily run loaded one direction and empty the other can register as one-way haulers and pay two-thirds of the standard rate on all miles. This calculator shows the standard full rate; if you qualify for the one-way election, multiply the result by two-thirds.

When are New Mexico WDT returns due?

Quarterly, by the last day of the month following the quarter: April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31. For 2026 specifically, Q2 files on the old rate schedule and Q3 files on the new one — don't apply the new rates to first-half miles.

Is this the official New Mexico WDT calculator?

No — it's a free estimator built on the official rate schedules in NMSA 7-15A-6 as amended by 2026's SB 2, including both the pre-July and current tables. Your actual return is filed with the NM Taxation and Revenue Department.
